OFF THE RECORD

The Melting Glaciers Of Northern Italy Reveals A Sanctuary Of 150,000 Perfectly Preserved Corpses

There’s 150,000 perfectly preserved corpses appearing in the melting glaciers of Northern Italy.

The glaciers of the Italian Alps having been hiding a pretty grim secret…

Over the last decade, melting glaciers have started revealing human bodies in the mountains, left from a battle in World War 1.

The White War was a three-year battle, waged between Italian, Austrian and German soldiers during World War 1, that took place on the mountains at elevations topping 6500 feet.

Now, 100 years later, the glaciers are melting and the remains of those soldiers are appearing through the ice.

What’s more, like something straight from a horror film, they’re all perfectly preserved….

While many soldiers were killed in battle, many others died from the conditions on the mountains, through hypothermia and getting caught in avalanches.

Around 80 corpses have been found, since the mountains began to thaw out around a decade ago, along with items such as photos, letters (including one soldiers ode to a woodlouse, ‘the friend of my long days’), all kept intact by the ice.

The ice has many more secret to reveal yet however, as it’s thought that around 150,000 men died on the glaciers.

Unfortunately the soldiers cannot be identified, but the fallen men have still been given military funerals on discovery.

Archaeologists are continuing to explore the Alpine battlegrounds and have discovered man-made caves and tunnels, alongside the soldiers.

Sometimes nature is stranger than any science fiction….
