Google Maps Is Tracking You! Here’s To Stop It (2 Clicks Away)

Among the many concerns that people have about the Internet, privacy and security have to be at the top. Whether using a computer or our mobile devices, we all know that websites and apps track us in different ways. But exactly how far do they go?

In a lot of ways, it’s much worse—or at least more pervasive—than we may think. There’s one app that you probably already have on your smartphone, for example, that’s tracking your every move. Scary, huh? Thankfully, there’s something you can do about it!

If you have Google Maps on your phone, you’ve probably activated its integrated location feature, which constantly tracks your location. This data can allow criminals to track you if you’re not careful.

For proof, log in to your Google account and click on your Google Maps timeline. If enabled, it’ll show you where you’ve been over the course of the past month!

It may be tempting to delete your Google Maps app entirely, but that’s actually not necessary. First, see if your location is activated by checking the status in the bottom left corner. From there, you can click or tap “settings” and deactivate the location. (This won’t delete your entire tracking history, though; tap “settings” again to do that.)

You can see all the places that you’ve been over the course of the past month by clicking “manage your own places,” and even specify the period by which you want to delete your stored locations.

Google Maps is an incredible resource, but it’s important to be aware of how your devices store and use your information. Don’t risk leaving yourself exposed!
