6 Mind-Bending Movies That Will Make You Question Reality And Life

There are kind of movies that make you fall in love with them instantly, while there are some that give you an adrenaline rush.

Movies affect us more than we think they do… they can make us feel a certain way and they can inspire us to become a better person. The ones that provoke the mind with their mystery and charm are the ones that awaken us from within.

Here is a list of some movies which have tripped our minds:

1. Waking Life, by Rickard Linklater

This movie was released in 2001. The plot of the movie shifts between dream and reality. You could never tell which is which because the line between the two is so craftily blurred. The protagonist is seen wandering through moments, dialogues, and scenes. The movie is very trippy. It plays with your mind as you question the reality of reality. You will be thrown into an existential crisis as you philosophize the meaning of life and existence.

2. Samsara, by Ron Fricke

It is a documentary film made in 2011. The title of the movie, “Samsara” is a Sanskrit word which means “continuous flow”. It is used to denote the loop of continuous life that is the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. The movie deals with such a theme. It has aesthetic visuals and the background music compliments them beautifully. The movie’s underlying theme is of human interconnectedness.

3. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, by Apichatpong Weerasethakul

This movie was released in 2010 and became the first Thai movie that won the Palme d’Or. The title of the movie pretty much reveals the plot. Uncle Boonmee, the protagonist is dying and during the last few days of his life he goes on a journey exploring his past lives.

“Uncle Boonmee” is said to be the last part of a film trilogy titled “Primitive” which focused on a particular area of Thailand. While the earlier two movies focused on the political and historical elements of that area, “Boonmee” stands out as a personal journey. According to the director the movie is like a “personal diary”.  Some of the themes found in the movie are reincarnation, memory and transformation.

4. Under the Skin, by Jonathan Glazer

It was released in 2013. Scarlett Johansson is seen in the leading role as she delivers her spectacular performance as an alien creature. Scarlet is an unnamed alien who seduces men and leads them to her “harvesting place”. The movie will leave you stunned, questioning what you saw and trying to understand the math behind every scene. Under the Skin deals with the theme of personal growth, human experience and consciousness. Scarlet goes through the process of becoming human as well as being human.

5. Enter the Void, by Gaspar Noe

It is a French drama film released in 2009. The film is set in Tokyo and narrates the life of a drug dealer who has an out-of-body experience. It is from a first-person point of view and we travel along with the protagonist as he moves between time and space. The movie has a psychedelic quality to it because of the audio-visual effects. It will leave you thinking and groping for truth.

6. Andrei Tarkovsky’s films

Solyaris, Stalker, The Mirror, and Nostalgia are some of the good movies to begin with. Any movie by Tarkovsky will blow your mind as he engages with the minds of the audience in a thought-provoking, meditative way. Themes of his movies revolve around childhood, dreams, memory, the metaphysical and the illusory. The symbolism in his works cannot be denied. His films might not be easy to understand but once you do get on the reflective and perceptive quality of the films, you are sure to be baffled as well as enamored by them.
