OFF THE RECORD

What’s Hiding On The Bottom Of Plastic Bottles Is More Important Than Anyone Realizes

If you look closely, several products you use around the house have notations on them. It could be printed on the tag, or on the body itself. You never stop to read or think about them, and for the most part of your life, these go unnoticed.

Scientists and environmentalists stress on the absolute necessity of learning about these notations. Otherwise, they can pose severe threats to both you and the environment.

Researchers say that you must note the various numerical combinations beneath plastic containers. Let’s find out what these spooky indentations mean:

Beneath every plastic bottle, there’s a figure that signifies ‘recyclable’, with a number attached to it. If it reads ‘1’, then you’ve got your hands on soda or water. These containers can be used again, but they are prone to germs. So, use with caution!

Go for those with ‘2’ on their label, if you do not want to discard them after the first use. These containers provide stronger protection against the toxicity, than ones with other digits. Examples of such bottles are milk bottles, and juice containers.

Containers printed with ‘3’ aren’t popular at sidewalk deposits because these contain DEHA, a harmful substance. Google the centers that are specially allocated for waste material of this sort. These include oil containers, rusty wiring and cable lines, detergent packs, etc.

Containers of the ‘4’ kind, are manufactured from the most harmless sort of plastic there is. They can be used several times, without the ingredients getting absorbed into your skin, or the product. These kinds are abundantly found in things of popular use at commercial sites. For example: Malls and shops need packets, every household needs laundry bags, food establishments need holders, etc.

If the bottle has ‘6’ printed on it, there is a flashing red flag. You cannot afford to use this container again. You find these mostly among crates that carry ordered food, or eggs, and disposable party dishes. They pose a serious threat to your life and the environment. These must never be microwaved at any cost, otherwise the toxins multiply manifold.

Number ‘7’ is generally issued to batches of products that should be crushed and thrown away after first use. If this advice is not heeded to, the overuse of such items can make you infertile in the long run. They possess BPA, an extremely harmful chemical. Usually, big water dispensers, and even bottles made for children, are from this material.

This village is setting an example for how all of us should treat the environment:

Having observed first-hand, the devastation that discarded plastic items cause, Robert Bezeau brainstormed to create ‘Plastic Bottle Village‘. It aims to rectify two problems in one go.

Spreading across 83 acres on Isla Colon in Panama, he persevered to build a village using these discarded materials. His aim was to provide a roof to the inhabitants, and also recycle harmful waste.

Every unit or house demands 14 thousand bottles and their aim is to create 120 housing facilities in all. That amounts to about 1.7 million bottles! They also dream of building a community hall, gardens, a yoga center, etc.

There are tonnes of plastic waste that require attention. It has become the question of our safety.

Let’s get together and build a cleaner world!
