Another following Full Moon will be on January 31st. Since it has no given name, that makes it a Blue Moon. However, this Blue Moon will have a red look in some of its areas, because it will cause a total lunar eclipse, which is also known as Blood Moon.

Full Wolf Moon

The reason behind the name is because this moon appeared when wolves howled in hunger outside the villages. While some claim that this is a Native American name, others say that this name has Anglo-Saxon origins.

In Anglo-Saxon culture, the January Full Moon was also called the Moon after Yule, which is the time of the ancient festival celebrating the Winter Solstice around December 22.

In other cultures it has also been known as Old Moon, Snow Moon and Ice Moon.

Wolves howl as a way of communicating with others of their kind. During spring and early summer, they only howl to pack mates. An average howl lasts somewhere between 3 to 7 seconds, but a chorus from a pack can last from 30 to 120 seconds and even longer during the breeding season in February.

Wolves are pretty loud during the beginning months of the year, which is probably why people associated January and the Full Moon with wolves.
