As I walked through the heart of my city this morning, I was looking at all the soul mates preparing for the day/night with happy lovable plans. I’ve noticed the secret surprises in men’s eyes. By the things I saw something hit me and threw me back in time. It was years ago when I read the story about the “ Coffee with Salt ”.
It was pretty inspiring story that triggered my emotions back. It’s a story about a man showing loyalty to his soul mate in all the years they spent together. I don’t want to ruin the story with my panoramic overview so here it goes:
The men meet a girl at a party. She was so special. There were many “hyenas” chasing after her while he was so normal and nobody paid attention to him.
At the end of the party he found his “gut” and invited her to have coffee with him. She was gently surprised but she was too polite to reject the offer.
They sat in a nice coffee shop and he was too nervous and un-experienced to say anything. As every normal girl would, she felt uncomfortable sitting in silent and all she was thinking was “please, let me go home”
He felt her thought and he came up with the last card and asked the waiter, “Can you please give me some salt? I would like to put it in my coffee”. People were turning and looking at this guy with not-so-good opinion. He was so embarrassed, but knowing that he had not choice left literally, he put salt in the coffee and drank it.
It was hard to say that the girl didn’t felt as everyone else with the opinion, but also felt curious and asked him, “Why do you add salt in your coffee?”
He replied, “As young boy I lived near the sea. I loved playing in the sea where I could feel the taste of the sea which is just like the taste of my coffee. Now every time I had the salty coffee it brings memories of the childhood. I miss my hometown. I miss my parents who are still living there.” During the sad talk his eyes started fling with tears. She was deeply touched and thought that they were his true feelings from the bottom of his heart. Man who expresses his homesickness must be a man who loves home, cares about home and takes responsibility of his home. They started chatting and she told him about her childhood and her family.
Playing his last card right, they had really nice talk and started dating. Thorough time she found that he was a man who meets the personality of good partner, he had tolerance, was kind hearted, warm, and careful. She almost missed his love when the last minute saved his back by the strange request by putting salt in the coffee.
The story continued, they lived happy together and every time she made coffee for him she put salt inside because she knew that is the way he liked it.
While no story is never truly happily ever after, fast-forward, after 40 years he passed away and left her a letter which said:
“My dearest, please forgive me, forgive my whole life’s lie. The only lie I said to you was the salty coffee. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous that I actually wanted some sugar but I said salt. It was hard for me to change what I said so I just went for it. I never thought that could be the start of our communication! I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was afraid to reveal myself because I have promised not to lie to you about anything. Now I’m dying and I’m no longer afraid of anything so I wish to tell you the truth. I don’t’ like the strange, weird and bad taste of salty coffee, but I have had salty coffee for my whole life! Since I knew you, I never felt sorry for anything I had ever done for you. Having you with me is my biggest happiness throughout my whole life. If I can live for the second time, I would still want to know you and be with you for my whole life even though I would have to drink the salty coffee again”
The letter was all wet from her tears.
Someday, someone asked her, “What’s the taste of salty coffee?”
She replied “It’s sweet.”
