Why Don’t The Amish Get Cancer?

A recent study published in the journal Cancer Causes and Control has revealed that Amish people have virtually no cancer within their population, and are considered the most healthy people in America.

Researchers from Ohio State University originally launched a study on the Amish population to see whether rates of cancer would be higher due to their lack of conventional medical care. What they found, however, shocked them.

The Amish were found to have much lower rates of cancer than the rest of the population, so researchers decided to look more closely at their lifestyle choices and diets to find out why.

Naturalnews reports:

Most Amish people do not smoke or drink and they are typically not sexually promiscuous, leading researchers to believe that these lifestyle factors play an important role in the limited number of cancer cases.

Other factors examined include the high amount of physical labor undertaken by the Amish. Most Amish people work in farming, construction, and other production jobs that require intense physical activity that keeps them healthy and in shape. While the rest of America sits in fluorescent-lit cubicles all day, the Amish work hard to produce crops, build furniture and structures, and produce useful goods, which researchers recognize contributes to their excellent health.

Another important factor not specifically examined in the study is the fact that the Amish grow and raise all their own food. They employ time-tested, organic methods that provide them with healthy fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, and other untainted foods that most Americans never get. Rich in living enzymes, vitamins, and nutrients Amish food is grown and raised the way it should be, resulting in improved health.

While some may ridicule their secluded lifestyle, the Amish commitment to simple, productive lives and clean, local food is benefiting their health in ways that the rest of America can only dream about.

When compared to a life of sitting in office buildings all day, eating processed and genetically-modified junk food, and popping prescription medications, it becomes clear which lifestyle is truly deserving of contempt.

also there are family (group) oriented vs individual oriented (most Americans). They work together to over come group/individual problems/ less stress/ no competition/ mental health.

They rarely ever use conventional PHARMACEUTICALS either. Their meds grow in their herb gardens.

There is a lot of information left out of this article. Like for example on whether or not they vaccinate? Do they use any pharmaceuticals? What do they use for pest control? Weed control? What percentage of the ones that DID get cancer also had electronics or other “modern” items? Things that are just as important as working as a community, growing their own food, and being active…. I have already read articles about them not vaccinating and that they have less or almost unheard of cases of autism, add, adhd, aspergers, etc.

some vaccinate and some don’t, they do not use pest control or weed control, it is all natural, they pull they weeds by hand or use a hoe. True Amish do not have electronic devices.

Karen, majority of amish do not use any type of electronics or even electric in their homes, it’s against their religion.
It’s pretty obvious that their way of life style is 100 % different than typical Americans, and anyone who knows anything about the Amish, know they grow and raise their own food! If society collapses or an EMP attack happens, it will be the Amish who survive!

Live smack dab in the middle of Amish in PA, it is not against their religion, they have a choice as to what technology to use. They pick and choose, which is frustrating. These articles are showing the great things the Amish do, I am not bunching all Amish together. Im only observing what is around me. Haven’t read all of the articles yet, but has the incest been brought up? They have their “own” disease from inbreeding. So far, have read about puppy mills and other animal abuse. But….they grow their own food. So can I.

It all depends on the district they live in, they must obey the rules set by the bishops of that district

        Your point?????
The greater population of the American people have “incest” issues too.
So what ! if they pick and choose…why is that frustrating??
Sorry…..I missed the point you were trying to make in your post???

You are right. I see what they eat and it’s a lot of sugary things. Another point that you brought up is absolutely true. You can’t bunch them all together because they pick and choose what technology is ok and what is not. Some here in Kentucky drive cars, have cell phones, and use computer technology in their stores. The only real differences between them and the “English” are those things that they don’t want in their lives and the way they dress.

Actually, this article is cherry picking the findings. Some cancer rates are higher , and some are lower. Most people just look at an overall average, which, if only a couple of types are very low, will drop the overall average and give a misleading impression. For example, the rate of breast cancer is higher among the Amish.

The Amish don’t drink in public…but the do drink….my father was from the old order Amish….the difference is that they don’t let people see what they do.

This is hilarious. Yes they do smoke and drink, tobacco used to be a major export of Lancaster county and it’s making a comeback. 9/10 times you see beer cans along the road they came from an Amish buggy, and yes they can be arrested for DUI. As for the sex… I used to work 3rd shift at a convenient store. I cannot tell you how many times an Amish girl would go in the bathroom and an English girl would come out. It’s widely rumored around Lancaster that the girls attempt to get pregnant by an Englishman just before marrying as to combat some of the defects studying because of the shrinking gene pool in the community. I do always home when I see a red headed Amish child (the ginger gene doesn’t exist in the Amish gene pool so either he’s adopted or the result of such a tryst as his mother would have to be to carry the regressive gene) As for their diet, again from working at the convenience store I can attest to them loving junk and processed foods. While my family is not Amish we are PA Dutch and many of our traditional family recipes have been handed down to me and they are hearty and full of fat and sugar (though I will say I never substitute fake foods like margarine or artificial sweetener, we use butter, lard, and sugar) My mom once took a salad to a potluck dinner at a fire hall and it went completely untouched.

The articles compares the Amish working hard to Americans sitting in cubicals. Most of those jobs are overseas and have been for awhile. There is a bigger number of jobs that requires hard work over sitting in this country.

They most certainly do get cancer. The same as any other ethnicity or community. My mother in-law died of cancer, so did my husband’s uncle. Those are just in he last 10 years. I am sure here are many more. They do smoke, drink, and anything else you want to grow up there. I have no idea where this site is getting their information from but it is entirely wrong. And yes, my husband is ex-Amish. Articles like these really annoy me. Hey are doing nothing but giving false information about a group of people that by obviously know nothing about. The Amish do the same things that everyone else does. But no, they do not vaccinate. They do have problems with whooping cough, measles, etc.

It depends on the church. The more progressive ones allow much more. The groups around here and in most areas don’t. Either way, all of the information in this article is wrong. Electricity is allowed in certain areas, usually in the basement or barn for freezers, etc. Some places allow telephones in a building as far away from the house as possible. And the use of cell phones, usually by the younger generation, is very high. They just hide it from the elders and the church. And the fact that the article says that they don’t drink, smoke, and are not sexually promiscuous is laughable. They do not grow all of their food. Yes they have gardens and raise animals, but they buy just as much as everyone else.

Amish are people. Just like some catholics are developed some Amish are too. As you look at the Amish from one state to the next there will be differences. For those of us that have grown up around Amish we just see locals. For someone who has always been in a city setting, Amish are amazing!
It is just a article people will read. How will it be proven wrong or right? The Amish are going to read it.

Lies for a gullible public. Read the study. It only investigates tobacco related cancer in a small part of the country.

While there was a reduced amount of cancer, it was still significant.

If you are old and stop breathing it can be from many things. It can be from Cancer, but if you don’t bother to open a person up to check, or if you are old and decide even if you might have cancer you don’t want to do anything how are they (the medical community going to know?) Nothing wrong with it, just a different way.

You’re simply wrong. I spent 4 years in the children’s cancer ward at the Cleveland Clinic and I sadly saw several Amish kids with cancer. And yes, my friend, they smoke and they drink. Alcoholism is rampant in their community.

I know several Amish who have had cancer. They are really big on going to Mexico for treatments that have not been approved in the USA by the FDA. A couple of the Amish I know have had successful outcomes from their visits to Mexico.

They have numerous genetic birth defects due to inbreeding. So likely they have accidentally selected for genes with less cancer. Many Amish communities are not organic and use conventional pesticides. Not smoking will reduce cancer risk.
