3 Ways You Accidentally Make Yourself Less Creative, According to Science

With the advent of a New Year, we will all be making resolutions to be better people, find our directions, to do better professionally and to be more creative in our daily lives. Scientific research suggests that there are actually ways that one might be messing with their own creative prowess but the good thing is, you can stop the said behavior and really get your creative juices flowing.

Read on to find three very common ways we tend to hinder our creativity!

1. Think less

Researchers in UK found that when an electric current was used to shut down the cerebral and executive thinking, people were more creative as they were not restricted by their own mental agents.

Researchers at Stanford University found that over-thinkers are the ones that suffer the maximum loss of creativity.

When you think too much about something, your brain keeps going back to the solutions that you have used earlier and does not come up with new and creative ways to consider the issue at hand.

The solution here is to take a break and think about things in a more calm and relaxed fashion, maybe doing something that acts as a stress buster for you, so that your brain can feel less crammed and think of new, more novel things.

2. Clutter your life

We are always advised to de-clutter our lives as we all know what kind of damaging effects it can have on our lives, starting from processing information to getting things done.

Keeping all of this aside, it also needs to be said that clutter helps you be more creative.

There was a study conducted in the University of Minnesota that concluded that messy rooms resulted in more creative thinking.

Although it is not advisable to live in a mess in order to be more creative, it is definitely advisable to find a way to clutter your work and your home space that helps your thinking process and pushes you to be more creative in your thinking and problem solving skills.

Your brain is more active when it sees a clutter as it finds a mess at hand, and since it’s programmed to find the fastest and the simplest way to solve problems, it comes up with truly novel and creative ideas.

3. Let the routine go

Researches in Albion University conducted an experiment in which they gave puzzles to solve to a number of people at the times of the day when they are generally not working.

Night owls were asked to solve the puzzle in the morning and the early birds were instructed to do the same at night. This resulted in a 50% increase in the success rate of solving these puzzles.

When you need to solve a problem creatively, you will find that you are at your creative best when you are not supposed to be working because at that moment, your brain is not really under a crunch to get something done.

Your creativity can take you a long way, in every aspect of your life, so don’t forget to value and maintain that when you are doing what you do.

Whatever your profession might be, you need to be creative every step of the way to have things move as smoothly as possible.
